SRA Competence Statement: Meeting the Standards of a Solicitor’s Practice

SRA Competence Statement: Meeting the Standards of a Solicitor’s Practice

As a solicitor, it is crucial to possess the necessary skills and knowledge to provide competent legal services to your clients. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has set forth the Competence Statement, which outlines the standards expected from solicitors in their day-to-day practice. Adhering to these standards not only ensures the provision of high-quality legal services but also maintains the reputation and integrity of the legal profession.

The Competence Statement encompasses four key areas: ethics, technical legal practice, working with others, and managing yourself and your work. Let’s delve into each of these areas to understand how solicitors can meet and exceed the SRA’s expectations.

Ethics

A fundamental aspect of being a solicitor is upholding ethical standards. This includes ensuring confidentiality, acting in the best interests of clients, and maintaining professional integrity. The SRA expects solicitors to demonstrate a strong ethical compass and make ethical decisions in complex situations.

By staying informed about the SRA’s Code of Conduct and participating in ethics training, solicitors can stay up-to-date with the evolving ethical landscape. It is crucial to consider ethical implications when advising clients and to act in a manner that preserves the trust and confidence placed in solicitors.

When faced with ethical dilemmas, solicitors should seek guidance from the SRA’s Practice Advice Service or consult with experienced colleagues. This demonstrates a commitment to ethical practice and ensures clients receive the best possible legal advice.

Technical Legal Practice

Competence in technical legal practice is integral to delivering effective legal services. Solicitors must have a strong understanding of the law, keep abreast of legal developments, and possess the necessary research and analytical skills to provide accurate advice to clients.

To meet the SRA’s standards, solicitors should engage in ongoing professional development to enhance their knowledge and skills. This can include attending relevant seminars, conferences, and webinars, as well as staying informed through legal publications and online resources. Additionally, solicitors can benefit from participating in SQE 1 practice exam questions to test their knowledge and identify areas for improvement.

By constantly striving to enhance their technical legal practice skills, solicitors can ensure the provision of high-quality legal advice and representation to their clients. Furthermore, undertaking SQE 2 preparation courses can help solicitors develop the practical skills necessary for effective legal practice.

Working with Others

A collaborative approach is crucial in the legal profession, as solicitors often work closely with colleagues, clients, and other professionals. The SRA places importance on effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.

When working with others, solicitors should actively listen, communicate clearly and concisely, and respect the opinions and perspectives of colleagues and clients. Collaborating effectively with others ensures a smooth workflow, better outcomes for clients, and a positive working environment.

Solicitors can further enhance their ability to work with others by participating in SQE 1 practice mocks FLK1 FLK2, which simulate real-world scenarios and test their communication and teamwork skills. Additionally, SQE 1 preparation courses can provide valuable insights on working effectively within the legal profession.

Managing Yourself and Your Work

Efficiently managing oneself and one’s workload is crucial for solicitors to meet the standards of professional practice. This involves managing time effectively, prioritizing tasks, and demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.

To optimize productivity, solicitors should adopt effective time management techniques, such as creating to-do lists, setting realistic goals, and utilizing time-tracking tools. It is also important to maintain a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout and ensure a sustainable legal practice.

Solicitors can benefit from participating in SQE 1 preparation courses, which provide valuable insights on managing workload and developing resilience. Additionally, staying updated with SRA SQE exam dates allows solicitors to plan their study schedules and workload accordingly.

Conclusion

Meeting the standards outlined in the SRA Competence Statement is essential for solicitors to thrive in their practice. By adhering to high ethical standards, continuously enhancing their technical legal practice, working effectively with others, and managing themselves and their work, solicitors can provide exceptional legal services to their clients.

Whether you are a newly qualified solicitor or an experienced practitioner, adopting a proactive approach to meet these standards will not only ensure compliance but also contribute to your professional growth and success.

If you’re preparing for the SQE exams, consider taking advantage of resources such as SQE 1 practice exam questions and SQE 2 preparation courses. These can help you enhance your knowledge and skills, ensuring you meet the SRA’s standards as a solicitor.

Remember, competence is not a destination but a continuous journey. By staying committed to professional development and embracing the principles of the SRA Competence Statement, you can excel in your legal practice and make a positive impact in the legal profession.

  36. Egyptian security forces guard a polling station in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where
locals were voting in a referendum on constitutional amendments that could keep President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power until
    2030

Egyptians voted for a third and final day
Monday on constitutional changes that could keep President
Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in power until 2030, amid
reports of people actively being encouraged to go
    the polls.

Sisi, who become president in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 after eliminating
all serious political competitors, is widely expected to win backing for the
    proposed amendments.

The sweeping changes would extend his current term until 2024 and would also give him the right to stand
    for another six-year term.

Other controversial amendments on the ballot include boosting
his control over the judiciary and giving the military even greater influence in Egyptian political life.

AFP correspondents saw pro-Sisi volunteers handing out boxed meals at
several polling stations in Cairo to voters after they had cast their ballots.

The parcels contained staples such as oil, rice, pasta and sugar.

Human Rights Watch has criticised the “grossly unfree, rights-abusive environment” of
the vote, where the ‘No’ campaign has been effectively muzzled.

Ahmed Badawy, an engineer and youth activist with two political parties,
wrote on Twitter on Sunday that he had been arrested, using the widely used hashtag “Go down, say No”.

He posted a picture of himself earlier holding a red placard in an upmarket suburb of Cairo with the text “No, to the constitutional changes”.

“He didn’t commit any crimes. He was expressing his views in a peaceful manner”, Badawy’s lawyer
    Mohamed al-Baqer told AFP.

Badawy is detained in a police station but the family have received no official notification from the authorities,
    Baqer said.

In Imbaba, a working-class suburb hugging the Nile, an eyewitness on Monday
told AFP of seeing street vendors being forcefully loaded onto buses to go vote.

On the first day of the referendum, some voters told AFP their employers had encouraged them to vote “Yes” and transported them to polling stations in company buses.

In their initial report, an international observer team said “there were no hurdles to voting”.

Egypt’s state-affiliated foreign media body on Sunday denounced instances of critical international coverage.

The referendum also proposes other changes to the five-year-old constitution, including creating a second parliamentary
chamber and a quota ensuring at least 25 percent of lawmakers are women.

The final results will be announced on April 27.

    by pulling away from Washington.

Hart finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in his third triple-double of the season and the
ninth of his career. Karl-Anthony Towns produced 32 points and 13
    rebounds for the Knicks.

Wizards, who have lost 23 of 26 since splitting
    their first four games.

    Kings 110, Mavericks 100

De’Aaron Fox recorded 33 points, six rebounds and
six assists and Sacramento snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak with
    a victory over visiting Dallas.

Domantas Sabonis added 17 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists as the Kings recovered from an 18-point first-quarter deficit to give interim coach Doug
Christie his first win. It was Christie’s second game as coach after Mike
    Brown was fired on Friday.

    Spencer Dinwiddie scored a season-best 30 points and P.J.
Washington had a season-high 28 points for the Mavericks, who lost their second straight game.
Dallas played without Kyrie Irving (shoulder), Luka Doncic (calf), Klay Thompson (illness), Dereck Lively II (hip) and Naji Marshall (suspension).

    Bulls 115, Hornets 108 (OT)

Coby White scored 23 points and had the first basket of Chicago’s
8-0 burst to begin overtime to help the Bulls defeat host Charlotte.

White, playing in a return to his home state, also had 10 rebounds and nine
assists on a night when the Bulls shot 37.5 percent from the field.
They launched more than half of their shots from
beyond the 3-point arc, making 18 of 60 attempts from deep.

The Hornets trailed the entire fourth quarter until Miles Bridges hit a game-tying
3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left. Charlotte played without team scoring leaders LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.
Bridges led the way with 31 points despite going
1-for-10 on 3-point attempts before draining the shot
    that forced the extra session.

    Clippers 116, Pelicans 113

Norman Powell scored 35 points, James Harden added 27 — including four decisive free throws in the final
minute — and Los Angeles won at New Orleans.

Ivica Zubac had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who have won three in a row and five of their past six games.

CJ McCollum scored 33 and Dejounte Murray tallied 13 points,
10 rebounds, eight assists and six steals as the
    Pelicans lost despite making a season-high 18 3-pointers.

It was New Orleans’ 10th straight loss and 19th loss
    in 20 games.

    76ers 125, Trail Blazers 103

Joel Embiid scored a season-best 37 points to guide Philadelphia to a clinical
    win at Portland.

Embiid went 12 of 21 from the floor and 12 of 13 from the free-throw
line and had nine rebounds as the Sixers won their fourth
straight game. Tyrese Maxey added 23 points.

Anfernee Simons scored 25 points for Portland while Deni Avdija’s 17-point haul was offset by 10 turnovers.
The Blazers shot 8-for-36 from 3-point range while also coughing up 26 turnovers as their two-game winning run ended.

    Cavaliers 113, Warriors 95

Darius Garland finished with game highs of 25 points and eight
assists as visiting Cleveland cruised to its seventh straight win, defeating host Golden State in San Francisco.

Donovan Mitchell finished with 23 points, and
his 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc led Cleveland to
an 18-of-47 night (38.3 percent) from long distance.

Golden State star Stephen Curry went 4-for-14 and scored just 11 points, his third-lowest
output of the season. Moses Moody paced the Warriors with 19 points.

Mobile phones rather than bank cards could soon be used
    at ATMs to withdraw cash.

A new Getcash app has been developed that will allow people to take out
£100 a time from thousands of cash machines with a few taps of their smartphone.

Royal Bank of Scotland has created the app which will be available
to its 18 million customers who will be able to withdraw
from any one of the 8,000 RBS, Natwest and Tesco stores, across the country.

Revolutionary: Smartphone users will now be able to access their cash without wallets at the touch of
    a button

The new app works by allowing you to choose the amount you want to withdraw from a screen displayed on your phone.

A six-digit code then appears on your phone’s screen which is valid for three
hours and is tapped into an ATM to withdraw cash.

At first you will only be able to take out just £100 a time but this will soon rise to match
the amount you can withdraw with a debit card, typically £250.

You can also text a code to a friend who can then withdraw the money.

To use it you must have a smartphone or an iPhone or BlackBerry and download
    the GetCash app.

But Simon Rose, spokesman for banking pressure group
Save our Savers dismissed the app as a ‘gimmick’.

He said: ‘What about the millions of customers who aren’t able to download this app?

Will they end up being disenfranchised by their bank?’

‘RBS might be trying to make banking look sexy but if the experience of the last
couple of years is anything to go by, it would be better if they stayed dull and steady.’

RBS said GetCash would help revellers who want to avoid taking bulging bags or wallets out with them when they hit
    the tiles.

It said it would also prove invaluable to workers who arrive at the office only to find they have left their purse or wallet
    at home.

Royal Bank of Scotland has created the app which will be available to its 18 million customers who will be able to withdraw from any one
of the 8,000 RBS, Natwest and Tesco stores, across the country.

The app could also allow worried parents of cash-strapped students to send money directly to their
children if their loans failed to arrive in their
    accounts.

Ben Green, head of mobile at NatWest and RBS said: ‘This has never
been done anywhere in the UK, and yet is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it.’

The bank says that by the end of July it expects customers will be able to leave their
debit cards at home and use their phones to pay for items in shops – although it stresses there are no plans to
    phase out debit cards.

Banks and phone companies are racing to launch mobile payment technology.

In February Barclays launched its Pingit app which allows you to instantly send money with your mobile
phone to others who sign up to the same service.

And in April phone company O2 launched a similar service.
But unlike the RBS and Barclays apps which are free it comes with a
15p per message fee after the first six months.

However the technology has sparked fears could allow criminals to steal from users.

A poll for insurer Insurance2go found more than half of Britons were
worried mobile payments would put them at greater risk of fraud.

her efforts would result in big changes and said: ‘I can’t wait to share with you
    my transformation… I hope.’

Making a change: Helen’s declaration to undergo a fitness transformation in the New Year comes after she shared a bikini
snap of herself and her two daughters to Instagram

Christmas diet: Helen joked that since December 1st all she has eaten is
chocolate, telling fans on Monday: ‘I actually can’t believe how much chocolate I’ve consumed over the
    last few days’

Helen swears by home workouts to maintain her svelte physique and has shared her own series of
‘mumma fit workouts’ on fitness app TV.FIT, telling
fans via Instagram: ‘I don’t need child care to go to
the gym I can just workout in my living room and achieve
    my fitness goals.’

The soap star is mum to two daughters – Maltida,
four, and 18-month-old Delilah, whom she shares with her footballer beau Scott Sinclair – and candidly
spoke of her struggle to regain her pre-pregnancy figure
in a recent social media post.

Sharing a throwback photo from when her eldest daughter Matilda was just a month old, Helen wrote: ‘Found this picture
on my old iPhone, Matilda was about a month old here,
this was four and half years ago.

‘My tummy hadn’t just magically sprung back, it was the
last thing on my mind as I was too busy soaking up my baby bubble and I was just happy to be a
mother and have this beautiful precious baby.’

Honest: Helen is mum to two daughters – Maltida, four, and 18-month-old Delilah – and candidly
spoke of her struggle to regain her pre-pregnancy figure in a recent social media post

Helen continued: ‘I did struggle with my pelvic floor
after having Matilda. I remember the midwife mentioning it to me
but I was just so overwhelmed with Matilda, I’d never
been around babies before, I was like, “Pelvic what?”‘

Going into her second pregnancy with more knowledge, Helen said she didn’t
have the same issue with her pelvic floor after welcoming Delilah, thanks to post-partum workouts designed to strengthen it.

The pelvic floor is the muscular base of the abdomen which supports the
lower internal organs and can cause loss of control of the bladder if weakened.

Helen looked incredible in a bikini snap she shared to
reflect on 2019, which saw her pose in a pink and
white gingham two-piece while cuddling up to her children.

Throwing a sheer white cover up over her swimwear, Helen was
seen smiling as her little girls, Matilda and Delilah, both wore swimsuits to match her bikini.

Alongside the post, that featured sweet photos of
her family, Helen told fans she is ‘grateful for the love in my life’.

Happy: Helen shares her two daughters with her
    long-term love, footballer Scott Sinclair

  48. Superfast or superslow? A loophole means companies can advertise a speedy
service even if as few as 10 per cent of customers actually get it

You might be paying for superfast internet – but it doesn’t mean you’re getting
    it.

A loophole means companies can advertise a speedy service even if as few as 10 per cent of customers actually get it.

Here are the top five tricks to getting the most out of broadband.

    CHECK FOR SPEED

While price is important, there’s no point saving a few pounds just to end up with a connection so slow you can’t even download an email.

Companies regularly advertise speeds of up to 50Mbs or more.
An Mb is a megabit, which is data. Each Mb is a million bits
of data sent and received every second, so the higher the number, the faster your connection.

But research has shown many customers’ connection speeds
are about a quarter as fast as those advertised.

You can check your speed on websites such as BroadbandSpeedchecker.

They’re simple to use, just type in your postcode and it will
measure your connection at the click of a button.

If you just want to check emails you only need
3Mbs. But if you want to watch TV online you need 20Mbs.

Using a comparison website is the best place to shop around.
Property website Rightmove will also outline the top broadband
speed in your area, and the companies that can provide it.

    TRACK THE NEIGHBOURS

It’s not just the provider you choose that dictates internet speed — how close your home is
to a phone exchange, the quality of the phone line and wiring, and number of people using
the same provider locally will all affect it.

At maps.thinkbroadband.com, an interactive map will show you where your nearest telephone exchange is,
estimate the best speed you can get, and tell you whether you can get
    super-speedy fibre optic broadband.

Punch in your postcode with firms such as uSwitch and you can even see which providers your neighbours are using, and what speed they’re getting.

Around 50 people are thought to use every connection at an exchange so if you
can see that everyone on your street is using one company for their internet, it
might be worth considering using the next best provider to avoid traffic on the internet highway.

    GET A LITTLE CLOSER

Although most people will want wireless internet, your connection will be stronger if you’re
connected directly to your router (the box that turns the phone signal into an internet connection).

Keeping the router near the phone will help too. It sounds simple, but by moving everything closer together
the signal doesn’t have to travel as far, and can do so more quickly.

Finally, make sure you protect your connection with a password.
It might be a hassle to remember when you’re setting up a new device, but you don’t want neighbours slowing down your speed by piggybacking free on your internet
    when you’re paying for it.

    SHOP AROUND

Match the speed you want to the price you can afford.

Many of top deals boast unlimited downloads, but very few households
will actually use enough data to need such a package,
so don’t be suckered in by what seems like a good deal.

It’s not just speed that is important, but how much data you can download.

This is measured in gigabytes — a standard film
takes about 1.5Gb, an HD film 3Gb.

But some firms have policies which place a cap on the so-called unlimited data,
so check. If you mostly use the internet for shopping, email and social media you won’t need
    much data at all.

Even if you watch just a couple of programmes online each week, you can probably get away with
    a basic 10Gb-a-month package.

If you have teenagers who play video games online frequently and watch endless films through Netflix, you’ll
want to look at bigger packages, and super-fast
fibre optic broadband if it is available in your area.

Some providers might slow down your connection at peak times, so think
about when you log on to the internet, too.

If you work from home during the day it won’t affect you.
But if you only use the net to watch TV between 7pm and 10pm you might feel frustrated if your provider brings so-called traffic management into play.

    HAVE ONE SUPPLIER

Getting your TV, phone, and broadband from one supplier could lead
    to a cheaper deal.

uSwitch estimates this can save up to £200 a year.

The best broadband-only deal from Plusnet is about £15 a
month, BT line rental is on top.

But if you get your home phone line from Plusnet too, you
pay £15.95 for phone and just £2.50 for internet — or
    £18.45 a month.

A TV, broadband and phone package from TalkTalk costs about
£21 monthly for the first year if you sign an 18-month contract.
After the first year the bill increases by about £5 a month.

BT has a TV, phone and internet deal for about £28
a month on an 18-month deal. TV and broadband are free for six months,
then £15 a month, line rental is £16.99.

But there are set-up costs and you have to pay for the router, all of which will cost another £57.
